This guy is a great writer. I will read whatever he does. He is also a really good guy by reputation. I have never met him but I have heard he has tremendous integrity and is a straight shooter. Thanks for the piece Neely.

Sorry, but as an old Hawaii Five O fan I agree about Alex O. being too soft to play McGarrett. He would had worked better as Danno. He is not rough enough to play the main lead.I watched the pilot and he is too bland. Scott Dann is the one that is doing the good acting.

Anyone who ever watched Alex O'Loughlin as Mick in Moonlight or as Kevin Hyatt in The Shield should know he's not only an extremely talented actor who can switch from character to character with incredible ease but that he is perfectly cast in Hawaii Five-O and is in no way "too soft" to portray a gritty, hard-nosed character like Steve McGarrett. He will bring some much needed emotion to that character AND the show which Jack Lord, good thought he was at the time, did not. Plus, there is no way I'd ever buy Scott Caan as McGarrett.

I have to disagree that Alex didn't sell well as a transplant surgeon on Three Rivers; I found him to be totally believable. The show itself didn't pan out due to lack of character depth and development, but that's the writers' fault; Alex was great in his role and had the show been given a chance to find its feet it would have succeeded. I think Alex will shine in his role as Steve McGarrett and I look forward to seeing him in the Fall!

Dear Neely, That was such an enjoyable read. Thank you for excellent questions and insight, that gave this interview such a fresh and professional flavor. Chip is a terrifically talented writer and, for an actor like me, a "God sent" when a script like his, or one of his mentors gets to my hands. I want to thank him as well for his candor and his gift. I so enjoyed reading the excerpt of "Private Eyes" (perhaps great advice from Neely?) and wish him the best of luck with Dexter (great show!) and with hopes that our paths cross sometime (again?) in the future.
Keep up the great blog Neely!

I love this premise! This is a show that I would watch, as would my Mom, my sister, my niece, and all of our friends. Bird would be such a major asset to any network. Neely, many thanks for showcasing such terrific artists.
